Two of her amazing porcelain rabbits!! Click here to see rabbits! (actually since writing this I've learnt they're hares!)

Sophie Woodrow is a ceramic artist based in Bristol who creates beautiful handmade creatures in porcelain, by hand building delicate and ethereal animal and human forms.

Sophie was born in Bristol in 1979. Drawn to working with clay from an early age, she graduated in 2001 from Falmouth College of Art with a BA in Ceramics. Since then she has refined her intricate labour-intensive technique and a highly distinctive style. Each piece is hand-built, involving coiling, incising and impressing to create a delicately textured surface.

Her extensive knowledge of clay is evident in the decorative details which adorn her figures. The creatures are whimsical forms that Sophie has created from her imagination, an attempt to make forms of the different images she dreams up, a bridge between her imagination and reality.

Sophie’s sculptures are not visitors from other worlds, but the ‘might-have-beens’ of this world. She seeks to assemble creatures from the strange notions of what we define as ‘nature’ and of each other as people – as ‘other’.

Such amazing, beautiful and original work, this is one of my favourite pieces i've seen below - I love it!

Sophie used to live next door in Easton and is a really old friend of my partner Ben. Ben's collected a few pieces of Sophie's work over the years and they have pride of place in our living room. Having researched her work more in depth for this blog I now want to start collecting more of it, it's amazing!

Sophie's always been really interested to hear about my volunteering as a textile tutor at St Mungo's, when I approached her to donate she was really generous and happy to get involved. Thanks for the support Sophie, I'm so pleased with the rabbits, they're beautiful and it's so lovely and important to have local artists supporting the sale.

The St Mungos Online Sale on www.independentboutique.com will run until midnight on the 21st November.

Thanks again for your support.
